Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3: 5-6
Growing up in church I was taught to make a list and pray for the partner you want and submit it to God. Well, I did that prayer and it failed horribly for me. When I questioned God, he took me to 1 Samuel 8. In this passage Isreal asked for a King, but it was not within God's will. It is important that when we pray that we repeat after Jesus "thine will be done" in Matthew 6:10. What is my encouragement to persons considering a romantic relationship? First build your relationship with God so that you can understand and hear Him when He speaks. Don't rely on your natural eyes and base things on your experiences. I always say I could never pray for my partner because my mind can't conceptualize his personality.
Think to yourself what is currently my favorite thing to eat? Now ask yourself what my favorite thing was to eat before I found this thing? Imagine a toddler thinking that an orange is the sweetest fruit because that's all it ever had. When they are asked what fruit they want, they say orange because they have never tasted any other fruit. That toddler misses out on the variety of other fruits it may enjoy more. Similarly to romantic relationships and quite frankly all aspects of our lives we ask for things based on either our limited understanding or the limited understanding of others. Have faith, ask God to send and provide what He wills for you because it will definitely be better than anything you could image.
Hold onto God's promises because when things no longer look "good" His promise will guide your steps like Moses at the Red Sea.
Ask God for what you want like the scripture says but be willing and humble for Him to give you even more and to accomplish His will!
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matthew 7: 7-8
14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
1 John 5:14
5Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Don’t limit yourself to asking God for a bicycle to travel simply because you have never experienced a car.
20 With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of.
Ephesians 3:20
